Standard Mattress Sizes in Canada
Here, we’re going to go into more detail about the standard mattress sizes and who each size is best for. By the way, the differences in dimensions between the standard American and Canadian mattress sizes are never more than an inch, so if you end up going with an American mattress, standard sheet sizes from either country will work fine.
Crib Mattress Size
Crib mattresses are specifically meant to fit inside of cribs, hence the name. The standard crib size is 28 inches by 51 inches in Canada. These mattresses tend to be very thin and are only meant for infants and toddlers (anyone under 3 years old). In fact, they’re not meant to be more than 6 inches thick.
In general, crib mattresses should be relatively firm to support the infant’s body. A firm option is better than a softer option for crib mattresses.
Twin / Single Mattress Size
A twin mattress, also known as a single mattress, is the smallest of the standard bed sizes. In Canada, they’re 38 inches by 74.5 inches. Twin mattresses are typically used for children, but they’re also suitable for teens, or even some adults. A twin bed ideal for smaller rooms or bunk beds.
Twin / Single Extra Long Mattress Size
The twin XL mattress is five inches longer than the standard twin bed. As such, these mattresses are popular for taller adults, anyone over 6 feet tall. They can still fit into smaller rooms, and they’re a good choice for those who frequently have to accommodate guests.
You’ll frequently find a twin XL bed in college dorm rooms, since dorm rooms tend to be relatively small, but some college students may need the extra height.
Full / Double / Standard Mattress Size
A full-size mattress, also known as a double mattress or a standard mattress, is one of the most popular choices for single adults. These mattresses are 53 inches by 74.5 inches in Canada.
Full mattresses or double beds can also be shared by two adults, but they may be a bit tight for this purpose. But for a single adult, they provide plenty of room. They’re also a good choice to have on hand for overnight guests.

As such, California king mattresses are a good choice for couples where at least one person is very tall, i.e. 6 and a half feet or taller.
Though it’s four inches narrower than a standard king, a California king bed is still a great option for couples who like to spread out, or families who want to be able to fit more than two sleepers at a time. It’s also possible to find split California king beds, for couples who have different mattress preferences.

Unusual Mattress Sizes in Canada
Here, we’re going to take a look at some of the more unusual mattress sizes. While these non-standard sizes may be good options for some people and room sizes, keep in mind it’s often harder to find frames and sheets that fit these sizes, and they’re usually more expensive than standard frames and sheets.
Small Single Mattress
The small single mattress is even smaller than a traditional single. It’s 30 inches by 75 inches. This makes it eight inches narrower than a traditional twin-size mattress. It’s a good option for very small rooms or young children who don’t need a lot of space, but keep in mind children may outgrow these beds quickly.
Half Queen Mattress
In Canada, you can find a mattress called a half queen, which is just what it sounds like: half the width of a standard queen, at 30 inches by 79.5 inches. Buying two of these and placing them side-by-side on a standard queen frame allows you to create your own split queen mattress.
Queen RV Mattress
As the name suggests, the queen RV mattress is designed to fit inside of a standard RV (recreational vehicle). Made in Canada, it’s 60 inches by 74.5 inches, making it five inches shorter than a standard Canadian queen mattress.
Because these mattresses are designed specifically for RVs, they’re also generally a bit thinner than most other standard mattresses to reduce drag on the RV. As such, these are really only a good choice for those looking for a bed for their RV. They’ll be a bit thin for a standard bed frame.
Super King
The size of the Canadian super king mattress actually varies depending on the company, but in general, it’s about 72 inches by 78 inches. Don’t let the name fool you: It’s actually smaller than a standard Canadian king mattress. That said, because the size can vary, you can find super kings that are, in fact, longer or wider than standard kings.
For those who really need extra room and have some extra money to spare, you can also commission a super king to your exact specifications. Just be prepared to also commission a custom-made frame as well as sheets, or to make your own.

A number of different factors need to be considered when choosing a new mattress size. In this section, we’ll go over these factors in detail.
Number/Size of People Using the Mattress
Perhaps the most important factor is who’s actually going to use the mattress. If it’s just for one person, you probably don’t need to consider the king or California king sizes. Couples, on the other hand, can most likely eliminate anything smaller than a queen.
You’ll also want to consider your height, and your partner’s height if you’re sharing the bed. Anyone over 6 feet will most likely be happiest with a queen mattress or larger (though a twin XL may also work).
Bedroom Size
Another important factor is the size of the bedroom in question.
